I'm forgetful. I'm old. I have a phobia about having my hair cut. I'm just plain weird. Better than being weird weird.

Today I have the day off. I generally spend my day off doing things like sleeping, watching TV, sleeping, and more sleeping. And I try to go downtown to one of my favorite places to eat -- The Hubcap Grill. Located on Prairie Street between Fannin and San Jacinto it's very convenient for me. I just get off the bus and walk a half a block to the joint. It's a teeny tiny little place but the burgers are loaded with flavor.

Owner Ricky Craig starts with fresh ground beef which has never been anywhere near a freezer. The girls in the kitchen form nice large, loosely compacted patties and fry them on the griddle. They are cooked all the way through but still juicy, mostly because of the wonderful condiments Ricky has to choose from. The fried patty is placed on a lightly griddled, freshly-made bun. These buns are to die for. Oh so fresh! And soft and warm and slightly crispy on the inside edge.

There are many styles of burgers to choose from, today I had the standard double meat, double cheese burger. All the way. Lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, onions, mayo and mustard. It was wonderful.

I dined alone today as Tuesday is not my normal day off and my regular dining companion couldn't join me. That's okay because I love to people watch and this is a great place to watch people. Particularly men. Lots and lots of men. Who knew they loved burgers so much? Women don't seem to come to place, not when I'm there anyway. Cops, security guards, suits, recruiters from the armed services, postal workers, you name it. All men. And they love to come eat here. If I were looking to land a man, I'd hang out here all the time.

And that wouldn't be very long because Hubcap Grills hours are short. Too short for me on any day but may day off. They are open from 10-3, M-F and 11-2 on Saturday.

The best burger on the menu, in my opinion is the Muffuletta burger. I just love the olive and ground beef combination! I think Ricky makes the Muffuletta salad himself and it's the best I've ever had. Just thinking about the Muffuletta burger makes me want to go out and get one but the place is already closed for the day.

I've done the next best thing though. My co-worker works late tomorrow and he's going to swing by and pick me up a Muffuletta burger on his way in to work. Yippee! I'll be wanting to go to work tomorrow for sure!
